President Ma and Mrs. Ma Attend Inauguration of El Salvador's New President Mauricio Funes
2009-06-02

President Ma Ying-jeou and Mrs. Ma spent their second day in El Salvador in activities largely related to the inauguration of El Salvador's President-elect Mauricio Funes.

President and Mrs. Ma left their hotel at 7:40 a.m. on June 1 (9:40 p.m., June 1, Taipei time) and together with other heads of state and special envoys boarded a bus that took them to the venue where the inauguration ceremonies would be held – the International Center for Fairs and Conventions in El Salvador.

Members of El Salvador's National Assembly, Supreme Court justices, and representatives from countries throughout the world first entered the venue. After that, outgoing President Antonio Saca and Mrs. Saca, and outgoing Vice President Ana Vilma De Escobar and her husband entered the hall, followed by President-elect Funes and Mrs. Funes, and Vice President-elect Salvador Sánchez Cerén and Mrs. Sánchez. A brief religious ceremony was then held ahead of the inauguration.

The national anthem of El Salvador was played as the flag of the nation was brought into the hall. A handover ceremony was then carried out between the outgoing and incoming presidents, following which President Funes delivered his inauguration address. The ceremonies came to a conclusion when the flag of El Salvador was taken out of the hall.

President Ma and Mrs. Ma entered the hall following Panama's President Martín Torrijos Espino and Mrs. Torrijos. President and Mrs. Ma were seated on the far left hand side of the first row of the left side group of seats for heads of state. Mrs. Ma was seated to the left of her husband, with Panama's First Lady Mrs. Torrijos, Panama's President Torrijos and Honduran President José Manuel Zelaya Rosales seated to her left.

President Ma met with Honduran President Zelaya at noontime, with the two leaders exchanging opinions on future cooperation and other issues of mutual interest. Thereafter, President Ma and Mrs. Ma attended the state banquet for President Funes. The president had an opportunity to interact with and exchange pleasantries with other heads of state and special envoys. In addition, President Ma and Mrs. Ma offered their deepest congratulations to President and Mrs. Funes.

In the evening, the president held a dinner at his hotel for members of his delegation, persons involved in arranging the trip, and ROC embassy personnel in El Salvador. President Ma thanked everyone for their hard work on this trip as well as their ongoing efforts to further the ROC's diplomatic agenda. At the end of the meal, the president specially provided extra funds for meals to the ROC's technical mission in El Salvador, as well as overseas volunteers and alternative servicemen who are stationed in El Salvador. The funds were accepted on behalf of the group by the chief of the technical mission.

At 10:00 p.m. (12:00 noon, June 2, Taipei time), President Ma, the traveling press corps, legislators, county magistrates, and city and township mayors had a chance to interact at a reception. To thank the media for covering the events during this trip and their hard work, the president presented each member of the press with a coffee gift box from El Salvador. The gifts were accepted by the head of the press corps on behalf of the group. In addition, the president and those in attendance also helped to celebrate the birthday of one member of the press, ending the trip to El Salvador on a high note.
