President Chen Meets with Participants Attending the 32nd World Congress of Master Tailors.
President Chen Shui-bian on August 6 met with foreign guests attending the 32nd World Congress of Master Tailors, saying that in recent years Taiwan has won a number of awards marking excellence in the production and design of garments, from cutting, sewing, creative design, and cultural contribution to lifetime achievement. The president noted that the large number of awards presented to Taiwan tailors and designers demonstrates that Taiwan's tailoring standards are of a world quality.

The president said that Taiwan ranks sixth in the world in terms of creativity and innovation, noting that the island is especially well-known for its innovations in the fields of semiconductors, computers and LCD panels. In addition, Taiwan has also chalked up achievements in athletics and cinema. The president pointed to Taiwan director Ang Lee and New York Yankee pitcher Wang Chien-ming, who has already chalked up 13 victories this year, as shining examples of Taiwan's excellence on the world stage. He said he hopes the public at large will appreciate and further encourage such achievements. President Chen said that related government agencies have provided the assistance required in holding the 32nd World Congress of Master Tailors. Vice President Annette Lu on the evening of August 7 will personally participate in the fashion show being held in conjunction with the Congress. This marks the first time in history that such a high-ranking government official will take part in a fashion show, attesting to the importance that Taiwan places on the Western suit and garment industry.

President Chen also said he expects the Taiwan representatives to the Congress will put in a strong showing. He also invited representatives from the nations attending the event to travel around Taiwan during their stay here and enjoy the beautiful scenery and cultural highlights of the island. He urged them to share their memories with their countrymen to enable more people to know about Taiwan. Lastly, the president wished the participants a successful Congress.

Mario Napolitano, the president of the World Federation of Master Tailors, headed up the visiting guests to meet with President Chen at the Presidential Building. Also in attendance was Acting Secretary-General to the President Cho Jung-tai.
