President Chen Shui-bian at 9:30 a.m. on August 27 El Salvador time completed his trip to the Central American ally and at 11:00 a.m. arrived at Managua International Airport in Nicaragua. This marked the third stop on the president's "Trip of Joint Grand Vision and Eternal Concern." Nicaragua President Jose Daniel Ortega Saavedra and his wife, along with Vice President Jaime Morales and his wife were at the airport to greet President Chen on his arrival. The Nicaraguan leaders escorted President Chen down a red carpet, after which President Chen was accorded a full welcome with military honors. President Ortega made brief remarks in welcoming President Chen, after which the ROC (Taiwan) leader expressed his appreciation.
After the completion of the ceremony at the airport, President Ortega personally drove President Chen to the central plaza in Matagalpa, a city north of the capital of Managua. President Chen joined in a ceremony presided over by President Ortega to kick off his Zero Hunger Project. The plaza was filled with onlookers and the Nicaraguan public offered President Chen a warm welcome and applause upon his arrival. President Chen took the podium and made a speech, after which he donated radios and ear thermometers. The president expressed his hopes that the Nicaraguan public will enjoy peaceful and healthy lives, and also said he hopes they will be able to use the radios to listen to the details about the Zero Hunger Project.
President Chen also said he hopes the great people of Nicaragua will bravely stand up and show the spirit of the people of their country and what they are made of, just like the people of Taiwan have, helping to create prosperity throughout society amid limited resources. Despite an adverse environment, they must do their best to create unlimited possibilities, the president said.
