President Chen Shui-bian on the morning of October 8 met with Republic of Paraguay President Nicanor Duarte Frutos and his wife at the Presidential Office. President Chen said this year marks the 50th anniversary of the establishment of relations between the two countries. He added that President Duarte's visit to Taiwan this time is a state visit, making his trip all the more meaningful.
President Chen pointed out that October 11, the day following Taiwan's Double Ten national day celebration, is the birthday of President Duarte. He said that President Duarte on this visit will join in celebrating Taiwan's birthday with the 23 million people of Taiwan. Meanwhile, the 23 million people of Taiwan and Mrs. Duarte will also jointly congratulate President Duarte on his birthday.
President Chen said that thanks to President Duarte's outstanding leadership, Paraguay's Red Party has chalked up an exceptional performance in government administration during President Duarte's presidency. In addition, the party's development has progressed significantly, he added.
President Duarte reaffirmed his support for the strong friendship between the two countries. He said that both Taiwan and Paraguay share common goals and ideals. As such, he expects the two countries will move forward hand in hand. President Duarte also congratulated Taiwan on its achievements in national development and its ability to overcome all sorts of obstacles. President Duarte also said Paraguay is not a country that can be bought off and his nation is the staunchest of allies to Taiwan. He said he sincerely hopes that Taiwan will be able to achieve international recognition at the earliest possible date.
