President Chen Receives a Group of Outstanding College Student Group Leaders
2003-03-04

Taipei, March 4 (CNA) President Chen Shui-bian encouraged Taiwan's youth Tuesday to devote themselves to their community and to voluntary service, saying that only love and care can create a society where people in need will be looked after and people can love each other.

Chen made the remarks while receiving a group of outstanding college student group leaders at the Presidential Office for their devoted volunteer and community service.

Describing himself as proud of and pleased with their performance, the president said he is happy to see that Taiwan's youth, despite having grown up in an affluent and prosperous society, still care for society and are creative and confident.

Chen also thanked the DCSI for sponsoring the annual selection activity -- the 10th of its kind -- which gives elite college student association leaders an opportunity to be encouraged and recognized.

The DCSI has been involved in many kinds of voluntary service both at home and abroad over the past 30 years, which Chen lauded as a good model for the general public.

He congratulated the award winners on their selection, describing it as a great honor and a very special experience they can share with other people throughout their lives. He encouraged the youngsters to devote greater commitment to voluntary social service after they graduate and to try their best to build a society in which "everyone is for everyone."

Chen also encouraged them to join the youth work team under the Presidential Office to pursue peace missions. The team has already recruited members from more than 20 cities and counties around the island.
