President Ma Ying-jeou met with American University President Dr. Cornelius M. Kerwin on the morning of April 9 at the Presidential Office. President Ma extended a warm welcome to Dr. Cornelius on his visit to Taiwan to engage in academic interaction with counterparts here.
The president commented that American University is an important university in the United States capital. American University is known for its departments of law and political science, and the university maintains interaction with National Taiwan University and National Chengchi University in a variety of academic fields. In particular, American University and National Chengchi University's College of International Affairs are involved in a number of cooperative projects, he said. President Ma said he welcomes academic interaction and cooperation between the ROC (Taiwan) and the United States.
The president added that American University is responsible for having nurtured a large number of outstanding individuals for other countries. He said that he has several friends who are alumni of American University and that these individuals have made significant contributions in government agencies and the academic community here.
Dr. Kerwin expressed his appreciation to President Ma for taking time out of his busy schedule to meet with him. He added that he is delighted that American University is able to engage in academic interaction with well-known counterparts in Taiwan. He said that this sharing of knowledge and experience will aid in the further development of academic research between American University and universities in Taiwan in the future.
