Vice President Lu Expresses her View on the Mainland Chinese Asylum Seeker
2003-02-18

Taipei, Feb. 18 (CNA) The Ministry of Foreign Affairs (MOFA) should consult with the United Nations on resettling Xu Po, a mainland Chinese asylum seeker who flew into Taiwan from Seoul Jan. 26, Vice President Annette Lu said Tuesday.

Saying that Xu's resettlement is an international refugee issue as he has the status of an international refugee, Lu said that the Human Rights Advisory Committee under the Presidential Office has suggested that the MOFA be in charge of settling the issue and should communicate with the Geneva-based U.N. High Commissioner for Refugees.

Taiwan cannot grant him political asylum as it has no relevant legislation, neither can it detain him forever, Lu said.

However, she said the government will continue to take care of Xu and protect his safety during the process of his resettlement.
