President Chen Attends a Dinner Party with Senior Executives of Major Taiwan Trade Associations in Mainland China
2003-02-10

Penghu, Feb. 10 (CNA) President Chen Shui-bian said Monday that the government must consider national security and the country's interest while pushing direct air links between Taiwan and mainland China.

He said the government is evaluating the benefits and possible negative effects that proposed direct cross-Taiwan Strait air links might bring about.

Chen made the remarks while speaking at a gathering of representatives of mainland-based Taiwan businessmen's organizations.

Chen said that the government has paid great attention to the development of various industries in the island county.

He expressed hope that a government evaluation report on direct cross-strait air links will be released as soon as possible so that the people can discuss their merits and disadvantages.
