Taipei, Feb. 7 (CNA) President Chen Shui-bian invited the public Friday to visit the Taitung local cultural fair being held at the Presidential Office.
Addressing the opening ceremony of the fair which is organized by the Taitung County Government, Chen said that Taitung has abundant cultural resources and houses six of the 11 major aboriginal tribes in Taiwan.
In addition, he went on, the eastern Taiwan county has rich natural resources and beautiful landscape, including hot springs, two outlying islands -- Green Island and Orchid Island -- and promises to become a world-class recreational and tourist center.
The fair will give people a better understanding of eastern Taiwan, Chen said.
The fair, the 10th of its kind held at the Presidential Office and the first this year, is displaying articles and holding performances that represent cultures of the six indigenous peoples from the area -- Ami, Puyuma, Rukai, Bunun, Paiwan and Yami. It will run through March 28.
