President Ma and Vice President Siew attend New Year celebration marking ROC centennial
President Ma Ying-jeou and Vice President Vincent C. Siew on the night of December 31 attended a celebration held at Dajia Riverside Park marking the beginning of the ROC centenary. Also attending the show were Republic of Nauru President Marcus Stephen and Republic of Kiribati President Anote Tong, both of whom are currently visiting Taiwan, as well as government leaders and members of the public.
In remarks to the gathering, President Ma stated that upon its founding 100 years ago, the ROC became the first democratic republic in Asia, and the successor to 5,000 years of Chinese civilization. The nation's establishment entailed great sorrows and joy, as well as great indignities and distinction. Fortunately, the struggles of our forebears were not in vain. The nation eventually got on track, and for that, said the president, we must thank the founding fathers for the contributions and sacrifices they made to bring about political and economic achievements without any precedent in our history. The president thanked everyone involved in preparing for the centenary celebrations for their hard work, and extended his best wishes to the ROC on its centennial.
After concluding his remarks, the president, the dignitaries on hand, and the public were treated to a series of shows coordinated and planned by Lin Hwai-min that featured spectacular performances on land, in the water, and in the air. The crowd then watched a fireworks display that was designed by internationally renowned fireworks artist Cai Guo-qiang.
