President Chen Receives a U.S. Congressional Taiwan Caucus
2003-01-16

Taipei, Jan. 16 (CNA) President Chen Shui-bian told a group of U.S. congressmen Thursday that his country cannot accept Beijing's "one China" principle or its "one country, two systems" formula for unification with Taiwan.

Chen told the congressmen from a pro-Taiwan group in the House of Representatives--the Congressional Taiwan Caucus--that Beijing's insistence on "one China" and its military intimidation of Taiwan make it difficult for his administration to negotiate with Beijing.

The group is led by Robert Wexler and includes Steve Chabot, Solomon Ortiz, Dana Rohrabacher, Cliff Stearns, Gil Gutknecht, Shelly Berkley and former representatives Steve Solarz and Ben Gilman.

The Congressial Taiwan Caucus, founded in April 2002, has more than 110 members and is the second-largest orgaination of its kind in the U.S. Congress.
