2003-01-10

Taipei, Jan. 10 (CNA) President Chen Shui-bian received more than 10 foreign scholars and experts Friday who were invited to attend the International Conference on Taiwan Security and Air Power Thursday.

He expressed his belief that the people of Taiwan will understand better the importance of air power to the security of the nation following the conference, which was organized by the Institute for Taiwan Defense and Strategic Studies.

Chen said that Taiwan is pursuing permanent peace across the Taiwan Strait, but added that a strong military is required. "We love peace, but we must be prepared for safeguarding the peace," he said.

Describing the control of air supremacy over the Taiwan Strait as the key to the security of Taiwan and other parts of the Western Pacific, the president said that building a powerful air force is among the priorities of the Republic of China military.

Chen said that he expects the conference will arouse more discussions and participation by the public regarding national security.

The foreign scholars and experts called on the president, accompanied by Vice Minister of Foreign Affairs Kau Ying-mao.
