President Chen Meets with President of the Sao Tome and Principe
President Chen Shui-bian this afternoon received President Fradique Bandeira Melo de Menezes of Sao Tome and Principe and his entourages. The President extended his welcome on behalf of the people and government of the Republic of China (Taiwan) to President Menezes's fourth visit to the country.
President Chen noted that the eight-year formal diplomatic ties between Sao Tome and Principe and Taiwan have been smooth and successful. And their cooperation in combating malaria has come to a fruitful result as it enters the third year of the third phase. The President expressed his sincerest gratitude for Sao Tome and Principe's staunch support for the R.O.C.'s bid to return to the United Nations and to join the World Health Organization. President Chen said he owed his special thanks to President Menezes because the Sao Tome President has been outspoken for Taiwan during the U.N. General Assembly meetings.
