Taipei, Dec. 4 (CNA) President Chen Shui-bian attended the opening ceremony of a wind chimes festival in Kenting, Pintung County Saturday.
The president said the Pintung County Government has turned the small town, which is deserted by tourists during the winter because of its strong foehn, into an attraction by launching the wind chimes festival.
Located at the southernmost tip of Taiwan, Kenting is known for foehn during winter, a warm dry wind blowing off the slopes of the mountains and barreling through the barren land around Kenting. The strong wind brings Kenting's tourism almost to a halt.
Chen said the wind chimes festival is proof that creativity could convert waste into treasure, adding that making a fortune out of nothing is the most valuable spirit of Taiwan people.
