Foreign guests join in celebration of ROC centenary

President Ma Ying-jeou and Mrs. Ma, together with Vice President Vincent C. Siew and Mrs. Siew, received foreign visitors who came to the Presidential Office to offer congratulations upon the ROC's centenary. Among the foreign guests were ambassadors to the ROC as well as foreign delegations and representatives who had traveled from their countries to attend the ROC's National Day.

Approximately 500 foreign guests arrived at the Presidential Office at 8:50 a.m. to offer congratulations, including Burkina Faso President Blaise Compaoré, Republic of Guatemala President Álvaro Colom Caballeros, Republic of Nauru President Marcus Stephen, Republic of Palau President Johnson Toribiong, Solomon Islands Prime Minister Danny Philip and Mrs. Philip, Kingdom of Swaziland Queen Mother Ntombi Tfwala, Dominican Republic Vice President Rafael Francisco Alburquerque de Castro, and Paraguay Vice President Luis Federico Franco Gómez. While shaking hands with the foreign guests, President Ma and Mrs. Ma along with Vice President Siew and Mrs. Siew extended warm welcome to the visitors and expressed deep appreciation to them for coming. Also attending the occasion were Secretary-General to the President Wu Jin-lin (伍錦霖) and Minister of Foreign Affairs Timothy Chin-tien Yang (楊進添).

Apart from President Colom and other heads of state from the ROC's allies, also joining the occasion were former US Secretary of Defense Donald H. Rumsfeld, Japan-ROC Diet Members' Consultative Council Chairman Takeo Hiranuma, Burkina Faso Ambassador to the ROC Jacques Sawadogo and Mrs. Sawadogo, Head of the European Economic and Trade Office Frederic Laplanche, American Institute in Taiwan Director William A. Stanton, and British Trade and Cultural Office in Taiwan Director David Campbell. The ROC's Government Information Office also invited representatives of major media organizations from around the world, including Nelson Geovany García Barahona, editor-in-chief of La Prensa (Honduras); Elisenda Vallejo Cortinas, head of the international section of La Vanguardia (Spain); and press representatives from Sankei Shimbun, The Yomiuri Shimbun, and The Asahi Shimbun (Japan).
