President Ma signs joint communiqué with Swaziland King Mswati III

On April 17, 2012, the last day of President Ma Ying-jeou's visit to African allies on a journey codenamed "Project Benevolence and Friendship," the president called upon Swaziland King Mswati III at the king's palace, where the two leaders signed a joint communiqué.

The full text of the joint communiqué reads as follows:

1. At the invitation of His Majesty King Mswati III, His Excellency President Ma Ying-jeou, of the Republic of China (Taiwan) accompanied by the Minister of Foreign Affairs and other senior officials paid a three – day State Visit to the Kingdom of Swaziland from the 15th – 17th April 2012.

2. On arrival at the Matsapha International Airport, His Excellency the President was welcomed by His Majesty King Mswati III, the Prime Minister, Members of the Royal Family, Cabinet Ministers, Chiefs, Royal Councilors and Senior Government Officials.

3. His Excellency President Ma Ying-jeou paid a courtesy call on Her Majesty the Indlovukazi at Ludzidzini Royal Palace.

4. His Excellency President Ma Ying-jeou paid a courtesy call on His Majesty King Mswati III at Lozitha Royal Palace.

5. His Majesty King Mswati III conferred His Excellency President Ma Ying-jeou with the Medal of the Order of the Lion, the highest decoration of the Kingdom of Swaziland given to Heads of State in recognition of his great leadership qualities.

6. His Excellency President Ma Ying-jeou held private talks with His Majesty King Mswati III at Lozitha Royal Palace. The two Heads of State exchanged views on the current global situation as well as on other issues of mutual interest.

7. The two Heads of State agreed to review upwards program resources, within the ability of the Republic of China (Taiwan), for financial and technical support to the Kingdom of Swaziland in accordance with the Protocol on Cooperation signed by the two countries in January 2008.

8. The Two Heads of State affirmed the importance of dialogue and peaceful resolution of conflict. They further re-affirmed the need to work closely to promote peace and prosperity in the world.

9. His Majesty King Mswati III hosted a State Banquet in honour of His Excellency President Ma Ying-jeou at Lozitha Royal Palace. During this occasion, His Majesty commended the efforts of the Government of the Republic of China (Taiwan) for the remarkable progress in the implementation of the policy on “Viable Diplomacy” which has reduced the chance of conflict among the two sides of the Taiwan Straits.

10. His Majesty King Mswati III expressed his appreciation towards the long term assistance provided by the Government of the Republic of China (Taiwan) to the Kingdom of Swaziland in various fields.

11. His Excellency President Ma Ying-jeou thanked the Kingdom of Swaziland for the firm support of the Republic of China’s bid to participate in United Nations Specialized Agencies, such as the International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO), United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC) and other international organizations.

12. His Excellency President Ma Ying-jeou expressed his appreciation and gratitude to His Majesty King Mswati III, Her Majesty the Indlovukazi, the Government and People of the Kingdom of Swaziland for the conferment of the Medal of the Lion.

13. The Right Honourable Prime Minister Dr Barnabas S. Dlamini paid a courtesy call on His Excellency President Ma Ying-jeou at the Royal Villas Resort at Ezulwini where they exchanged views on issues of mutual interest between the two countries.

14. His Excellency President Ma Ying-jeou toured King Sobhuza II Park.

15. His Excellency President Ma Ying-jeou visited the Raleigh Fitkin Memorial Hospital in Manzini where he toured the hospital’s intensive care unit.

16. His Excellency President Ma Ying-jeou toured Matsapha Industrial Site.

17. His Excellency President Ma Ying-jeou had occasion to meet and exchange views with overseas compatriots in Swaziland.

18. At the end of the State Visit, His Excellency President Ma Ying-jeou expressed his appreciation to His Majesty King Mswati III, Her Majesty the Indlovukazi, the Prime Minister, Government and People of the Kingdom of Swaziland for the warm welcome and hospitality accorded to him and his delegation during his visit in the Kingdom of Swaziland.

After leaving the king's palace, President Ma and his delegation proceeded to Matsapha International Airport, where they were seen off with military honors, thus marking the conclusion of the journey to visit African allies codenamed "Project Benevolence and Friendship." The delegation's chartered plane departed at 9:30 a.m. local time (April 17, 3:30 p.m. Taipei time) bound for Taipei.
