President Chen Expresses His Views after the Demonstration Staged by Farmers and Fishermen Ended Peacefully
2002-11-23

Taipei, Nov. 23 (CNA) President Chen Shui-bian said Saturday that his government will sincerely address farmers' and fishermen's demands and the executive branch has had sound policies to deal with their problems.

In a press release issued by the Presidential Office shortly after a large-scale demonstration staged by more than 100,000 farmers and fishermen in Taipei earlier in the day, President Chen said that as being the son of a poor tenant farmer, he was impressed more deeper than anyone by the demonstration which gathered so many farmers and fishermen who travelled long to Taipei to present their appeals to the government.

Chen said that his government shares the same desire with the farmers and fishermen in seeking a sustainable development of the nation's agriculture and fishery and will continue to listen to grassroots opinions.

He called on the framers and fishermen to trust the government, to continue to support the government's reform programs and measures and to work together with the government for the nation's agricultural and fishery development.
