2012-08-18

Vice President Wu Den-yih spent a fourth day in the Dominican Republic on Project Sustained Friendship. In the morning on August 18, the vice president visited the Museum of the Royal Houses and the former residence of Christopher Columbus , both of which are located in the old section of the city. Vice President Wu's visit to the museum and the historic buildings exposed him to the unique architectural style in the country and its cultural history, and left a deep impression on him.

After completing their visit to the Dominican Republic, Vice President Wu and the delegation from the ROC in the afternoon flew to Belize. The chartered aircraft arrived at Philip Goldson International Airport at 2:30 p.m. on August 18 Belize time (4:30 a.m. on August 19 Taipei time). After the aircraft came to a halt, ROC Ambassador to Belize David Wu (吳建國) and Belize Chief of Protocol Diana Locke boarded the plane to welcome Vice President Wu. Belize Governor General Sir Colville Young and Minister for Foreign Affairs Wilfred Elrington were waiting by the plane to welcome the vice president. Vice President Wu received a formal military welcome and a 19-gun salute to mark his arrival, and was accompanied by Governor General Young in reviewing the Belize honor guard. The vice president also shook hands and waved to many of the overseas compatriots who were on hand to welcome him.

After arriving at his hotel, the vice president received a briefing from Ambassador Wu on the state of cooperation projects between the two countries and the status of the ROC embassy's operations there. Vice President Wu also learned more about the nation's latest economic and political situation, as well as its developmental prospects. He offered praise and gratitude to the embassy personnel for their hard work.

In the evening, Vice President Wu held a reception for the press corps traveling with his entourage. In addition to sharing his thoughts with them on his first visit, in his current capacity, to allies of the ROC in Central America, the vice president also responded to questions from the reporters on the outlook for Taiwan's economy, issues related to the Tiaoyutai islands, and topics concerning cross-strait and external relations.
