President Chen Meets with Dominican Republic President Rafael Hipolito Mejia Dominguez

Taipei, Dec. 3 (CNA) Visiting Dominican Republic President Rafael Hipolito Mejia Dominguez and his entourage bid farewell to President Chen Shui-bian Tuesday.

President Chen expressed the hope that President Mejia would visit Taiwan again, saying that the Republic of China cherishes its more than 60-year friendship with the Dominican Republic.

Chen noted that Dominican Republic Senate Speaker Andres Bautista and President of the Chamber of Deputies Rafaela Alburguergue de Gonzalez visited Taiwan in July and September respectively, which he said had greatly boosted bilateral ties.

The Dominican Republic first lady and vice president will also visit Taiwan early next year, Chen said, and he welcomed their visit warmly.

The ROC state of head also said that President Mejia has visited Taiwan twice during his tenure as president. Chen said he himself only visited the Caribbean country once, and he hopes to make another reciprocal visit as soon as possible.

Chen reiterated his appreciation for the Dominican Republic's long-term support for the ROC in the international community.

He said Taiwan would like to share its experiences in development and will help push for policial and economic improvement in the Dominican Republic.

The president said that the Dominican Republic is politically and socially stable, and with its diligent people, it is a paradise for investors. He urged Taiwan business leaders to invest there to boost trade and business cooperation.

President Mejia expressed his appreciation for Taiwan's long-term assistance in various aspects in his country, saying that both countries share the same ideals of democracy, and that he believes closer communication and cooperation will help strengthen their friendship.
