President Inaugurates Organizing Office for Science-based Park
Taipei, Nov. 6 (CNA) President Chen Shui-bian on Wednesday inaugurated an organizing office for a science-based industrial park in Yunlin County, central Taiwan.
Unveiling a name plaque for the Organizing Office for the Central Taiwan Science-based Industrial Park under the National Science Council, Chen said the park will turn the agricultural county of Yunlin into an industrial stronghold of the island.
The park, combined with the Hsinchu Science-based Park in Hsinchu, and the Southern Science-based Park in Tainan, will form the island's corridor of hi-tech industry, with the island's high-speed railway, which is slated to be completed by 2005, running through all of them, the president said.
After its completion in 2003, the 98-hectare park will mainly house the island's biotechnology companies and will create 12,000 jobs, according to the National Science Council Chairman Wei Che-ho, who was present at the inauguration ceremony.
Noting that National Taiwan University will open a campus and a teaching hospital in Yunlin soon, Wei said this will be a plus for the park's development.
