President Chen Meets with Former U.S. Senator Lester Wolff
Taipei, Nov. 3 (CNA) President Chen Shui-bian met with former U.S. Senator Lester Wolff Sunday for an exchange of views on a range of topics, including relations across the Taiwan Strait and Taipei-Washington ties.
During their wide-ranging talks, Chen also expressed thanks for Wolff's staunch support for the Republic of China during his long career in the U.S. Congress. "We appreciate your longtime support," Chen told Wolff, who arrived in Taipei Saturday for a goodwill visit. "I hope you'll continue to be our 'best friend,'" he added. For his part, Wolff said he has been concerned about the developments in cross-strait relations.
During his tenure as chairman of the Asia-Pacific subcommittee of the International Relations Committee of the House of Representatives, Wolff actively helped push for the passage of the Taiwan Relations Act to lay a solid foundation for Taiwan-U.S. ties in the wake of Washington's switching of diplomatic recognition from Taipei to Beijing in 1979.
Wolff said that although he has retired, he will continue to make every possible effort to help ensure Taiwan's security and sustainable development in the face of mainland China's perennial military threat.
