President Chen Presides over a Meeting of a Panel Charged with Planning Government Reforms
Taipei, Oct. 27 (CNA) President Chen Shui-bian vowed Sunday to push forward with government reforms, saying that successful government reform will lay the groundwork for the country's prosperity.
Presiding over a meeting of a panel charged with planning the reforms, Chen said government reform is at the center of his administration's efforts to revitalize the faltering economy and a task of great urgency.
The reforms will involve not just cutting the number of government employees but also improving efficiency and therefore enhancing the whole country's competitiveness Chen went on.
In the year since its establishment, Chen said, the panel has come up with a variety of plans to downsize the 225-seat legislature, revamp the current electoral system, streamline the government's organization and divide labor and funds more sensitively among central and local governments.
All these plans require the cooperation of the Executive Yuan, the Legislative Yuan and the Examination Yuan, he added.
Noting that the implementation of reforms will inevitably cause pain, Chen said this pain will not deter his administration from meeting its objectives.
