U.S. House Passes Resolution Welcoming ROC First Lady
2002-09-24

Washington, Sept. 24 (CNA) The U.S. House of Representatives passed a resolution Tuesday by a vote of 410-0 to welcome Republic of China first lady Wu Shu-chen's current 11-day visit to the United States.

The resolution also lauded Wu for her contribution to Taiwan's democratic development.

The resolution was jointly initiated by Benjamin A. Gilman (R-N.Y.), who is the honorary chairman of the House International Relations Committee, and Tom Lantos, a senior Democratic House member from California.

A copy of the resolution, to be placed in a wooden frame, will be presented to Wu Wednesday afternoon when pro-Taiwan congressional members host a cocktail reception on Capitol Hill to honor the ROC first lady.

Wu, bound to a wheelchair since a traffic accident in 1985, arrived in Washington, D.C., Sunday evening for a goodwill visit. She is the first ROC first lady to visit the U.S. capital since the United States switched diplomatic recognition from Taipei to Beijing in 1979.
