Vice President Lu Meets a Delegation from the Thailand Branch of the Lions Club International
2002-09-10

Taipei, Sept. 10 (CNA) Vice President Annette Lu called Tuesday for closer cooperative ties between Taiwan and Thailand, saying that there is still ample room for the two countries to enhance their substantive relations.

During a meeting with a delegation from the Thailand branch of the Lions Club International, Lu said that with their frequent economic and trade exchanges, Taipei and Bangkok are enjoying increasingly closer relations.

Many Taiwanese manufacturers have made a success of their investments in Thailand, while laborers from the Southeast Asian nation have made great contributions to Taiwan's economic development, Lu said, while asking her guests to help boost bilateral relations after they return home.

Lu voiced the hope that the two countries will be able to upgrade their substantive relations even up to the establishment of diplomatic links.

She also urged other Asian nations to support Taiwan's efforts to safeguard the peace across the Taiwan Strait and to participate in international affairs following the example of the European Parliament, which adopted Thursday a resolution in favor of Taiwan.

In its resolution, the European Parliament asked E.U. countries to recognize the success of Taiwan's democratization and its importance to other Asian countries, to allow the island's leaders, including President Chen Shui-bian, to visit E.U. states and to call on mainland China to withdraw the hundreds of missiles deployed against Taiwan, Lu said.

The resolution also calls for admission of Taiwan and India into the Asia-Europe Meeting.
