Before his departure, President Chen Shui-bian presided over a ceremony with full military honors at the Chiang Kai-shek Memorial Hall to bid farewell to Gonzalez and his entourage, while he was seen off at the Chiang Kai-shek International Airport by Foreign Affairs Minister Eugene Chien.

While in the ROC, Gonzalez Macchi called on Chen and Legislative Yuan President Wang Jin-pyng, as well as presiding over a ribbon-cutting ceremony for the Paraguay Economic and Trade Office in Taipei. He also visited the ROC-held island of Kinmen.
