President Chen Attends a Ceremony Marking the First Anniversary of the Taiwan Solidarity Union
Taipei, Aug. 11 (CNA) Presdient Chen Shui-bian urged his countrymen Sunday to stick to the "right path" and the "right conviction".

Speaking at a ceremony marking the first anniversary of the Taiwan Solidarity Union's (TSU's) founding, the president said "the right conviction should never be given up, and the right path should be followed through."

He lauded the TSU's performance in the 2001 ROC legislative elections in which the party won 13 seats in the Legislative Yuan with a total of some 800,000 votes around the island, saying it proved that the party's ideas are shared by many.

TSU lawmakers conducted themselves marvelously in the last session of the Legislature, Chen said, adding that they stimulated society to look seriously at various issues by forcing new points of view and new ideas on their countrymen.

Competition and cooperation between political parties are usual in a democracy, but competition--between the Democratic Progressive Party (DPP) and the Kuomintang and the People First Party--is not an endless cutthroat struggle. Instead, it is to offer the public different choices, he pointed out.

Cooperation between the DPP and the TSU is not designed to specifically to amass strength to fight against other parties, but rather to promote the people's overall well-being, the president went on.
