Vice President Lu Meets with Hedy M. Ratner, Founder of the U.S. Women's Business Development Center
Taipei, Aug. 6 (CNA) Vice President Annette Lu met Tuesday with the founder of the U.S. Women's Business Development Center, Hedy M. Ratner, who praised the achievements of the advocates of women's rights in Taiwan.
Ratner said there has never been a woman vice president in the history of the United States; therefore, Taiwan can be said to be leading the way in this regard.
The vice president noted that United States is like her tutor in issues of women's rights because her idea of protecting these rights was first formed in the United States.
Lu said during the last 30 years she has been working hard for the rights of Taiwan women by writing articles, giving speeches and attending television programs to fight for the cause. "Now Taiwan women's rights are considerably respected, and more and more women are becoming successful in politics," Lu said, adding that she felt quite satisfied with the situation.
Lu noted that President Chen Shui-bian also attaches much importance to women's rights, which was evidenced by his nominating her as his vice president. She also noted that one-fourth of his Cabinet members are women.
Since the president's inauguration two years ago, a gender equality bill has been passed in the Legislature, Lu said, adding that regarding the improvement of women's rights, Taiwan has not fallen behind the United States.
