2002-08-02

Taipei, Aug. 2 (CNA) ROC President Chen Shui-bian vowed Friday to breathe new life into the island's foundering textile industry and boost tourism in Taiwan.

Inspecting a silk processing zone in Yunlin County, central Taiwan, the president said he admired silk manufacturers who have bucked the trend of the local textile industry of moving their operations overseas and have instead chosen to stay in Taiwan.

Chen said his administration has made the textile industry a key sector to be revived in Taiwan under the national six-year development plan.

The government will use resources from the private sector to turn the island into a production center of high added-value cloth in the Asia-Pacific region. The same focus will be make toward making Taiwan a center for fashion and a worldwide logistic center for the textile industry.
