On the morning of August 17 (evening of August 17, Taipei time), Vice President Chen Chien-jen went to the National Palace of the Dominican Republic to meet with President Danilo Medina and pay a courtesy call on Vice President Margarita Maria Cedeno Lizardo. In addition to exchanging views with his hosts on bilateral relations and the prospects for future cooperation, Vice President Chen also invited each of the two leaders to visit Taiwan at a time of their convenience.

President Medina thanked the government of Taiwan for the longstanding support it has lent to the Dominican Republic, and offered high praise for how smoothly bilateral cooperation projects have been run and completed over the years.

Just before going to the National Palace, Vice President and Mrs. Chen toured an orchid nursery run by Taiwanese brothers Wang Guo-ping and Wang Zhi-ping. Because Vice President Chen himself specializes in biotechnology, during the tour he asked detailed questions and took great interest in the source of the seeds and seedlings, the greenhouse facilities, cultivation techniques, what sorts of jobs have been created by the nursery, and sales and profits. He was very impressed by what he saw, and enthusiastically praised the Wang brothers for their expertise and business acumen.

Vice President Chen stressed that Taiwan’s new administration will adopt more open attitudes and policies to encourage youth entrepreneurship. It will help creative and idealistic young people who are unafraid of failure, to give them a shot at big-time business success.

After completing their itinerary in the Dominican Republic, Vice President and Mrs. Chen headed onward to a transit stop in New York, where they were scheduled to arrive at John F. Kennedy International Airport on the evening of August 17, New York time (the morning of August 18, Taipei time).
