Taipei, July 15 (CNA) The Republic of China's diplomacy is aimed at making Taiwan visible around the world, President Chen Shui-bian told members of the nation's diplomatic corps at an information seminar for returning overseas staff Monday.
Beijing's attempts to isolate the ROC have turned diplomacy into a kind of battle line, where the cross-strait struggle is played out in front of the world, Chen said, adding that this makes Taiwan's diplomacy all the more important.
Recalling his just-concluded visit to four African nations, Chen said he was impressed by the efforts of Taiwan's diplomats, and technical and medical workers who have helped put to rest any notion that the ROC is conducting "checkbook diplomacy."
Chen urged the country's diplomats to live up to their mission and "usher in a new spring" in the country's diplomatic efforts.
The camp was opened for the heads of the country's diplomatic missions worldwide. Participants will be briefed on Taiwan's political and economic situation and will meet with various government leaders.
