President Tsai congratulates Vice President Chen and C. Y. Cyrus Chu on their election as foreign associates of US National Academy of Sciences

On the evening of May 2, Taipei time (US Eastern Daylight Time: morning of May 2), the US National Academy of Sciences announced a list of 84 new members and 21 foreign associates, and included among the foreign associates were Taiwan's Vice President Chen Chien-jen and Permanent Representative to the World Trade Organization C. Y. Cyrus Chu (朱敬一), both of whom are Academicians at the Academia Sinica. The pair were elected in recognition of their distinguished and continuing achievements in original research. Presidential Office Spokesperson Lin He-ming (林鶴明) stated that President Tsai Ing-wen was thrilled to receive the news of their election. In addition to congratulating them, she also said that their distinction is an indication of how much Taiwanese researchers have done and how highly regarded they are in international academic circles.

The US National Academy of Sciences was established in 1863 to provide the US government with independent expert advice on science issues and their impact on such matters as health, education, social welfare, and more. The academy commands high prestige and tremendous global academic influence, and currently has 2,290 members and 475 foreign associates.
