Taipei, June 24 (CNA) President Chen Shui-bian accepted an offer to serve as the supreme leader of the country's girl scouts Monday.
In a meeting with representatives from the National Girl Scouts Association of Taiwan, Chen accepted a letter of appointment to the mainly ceremonial head position of the association.
Representatives of the association also presented the president with a medal and a lapel pin.
Chen said he was honored to accept the job and added that the values advocated by the Girl Scouts, such as honesty, zest and friendliness are forces that improve harmony and prosperity in families, schools and society.
The association's advocacy of improving the world through community service is in step with the spirit of volunteerism that is so close to his own heart, Chen went on.
He said the association also give girls a valuable chance to develop their potential and become leaders of society, which will help realize his dream of a country ruled by both men and women.
Founded in 1958, the National Girl Scouts Association of Taiwan has more than 30,000 members and more than 100,000 people take part in its activities.
