Presidential Office statement on latest missile test by North Korea
The North Korean authorities once again undermined regional security and stability by launching a missile over Japanese airspace on the morning of September 15. Our National Security Council (NSC) promptly reported the latest information to President Tsai Ing-wen, and at 8:30 a.m. convened a meeting to assess the situation and develop a response. The meeting was chaired by NSC Secretary-General Yen Teh-fa (嚴德發), who invited the heads of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, the Ministry of National Defense, the Mainland Affairs Council, and the National Security Bureau to attend. Participants apprised themselves of the situation and discussed Taiwan's response preparations. After the meeting, they reported once again to the president.
The government of Taiwan strongly condemns the repeated military threats made by the North Korean authorities in disregard of international opposition and United Nations sanctions, for they undermine regional security and stability. President Tsai instructed the various agencies to ensure that all possible response measures are at the ready. These include continuing to monitor breaking events, remaining in close touch with other countries, sharing the latest information, and ensuring stability in everyday lives as well as the stock and foreign exchange markets. At the same time, the government will fully comply with UN Security Council Resolution 2375, which was adopted on September 11 (September 12 Taiwan time), and will implement the sanctions called for therein in order to jointly maintain regional stability and order.
