2002-06-09

Taipei, June 9 (CNA) The Republic of China on Taiwan must balance its development as a world-class powerhouse in technology with a firm grounding in the humanities, ROC Vice President Annette Lu said when she spoke at a southern Taiwan university Sunday.

Lu, speaking at the commencement ceremony of Southern Taiwan University of Technology, said that technological development is the wave of the future, but if technology does not go hand-in-hand with the development of education in the humanities, the nation could turn into a "technological monster."

Lu told the graduates to listen to their conscience as they travel along life's path.

She also said that graduation is not the end of one's studies, rather, it is the beginning of a lifelong learning experience.

The vice president also urged the graduates to place having a good life ahead of simply making money, saying that it is important to contribute to society where one is most needed.
