President Chen Visits Huei Ming School
2002-06-11

Taichung, June 11 (CNA) President Chen Shui-bian encouraged visually impaired students Tuesday to "set aside impossibility" and work hard.

Chen made the remarks during a visit to the Huei Ming School and Home for Blind Children in central Taichung County.

The president was responding to an invitation extended to him in January last year by Lee Mei-jen, who is a seventh-grader at the school.

Among the many letters he receives every day, Lee's attracted special attention because it was written in braille, the president explained, adding that he received another letter from Lee earlier this year, which recommended that he read "The Footnotes" by Lena Maria of Sweden.

Chen said that he is aware that visually impaired people face great challenges in their studies and daily lives. However, he stressed, life offers unlimited opportunities and possibilities.

The president received a warm welcome from the students and teachers upon arrival on the campus. He also had a private meeting with Lee and a third-grade student who is both blind and deaf, in which he gave them words of encouragement.
