Taipei, June 11 (CNA) It is the government's responsibility to provide a good investment climate to facilitate the nation's industrial development, President Chen Shui-bian said Tuesday.
While doing its utmost to improve Taiwan's investment environment, Chen said, the government is also responsible for making sure that no unnecessary interference or business sabotage occurs that would hamper industrial operations.
Chen said he believes that the general public, as well as the media, fully understand the government's stance of protecting the interests of private businesses. The president was referring to some "policing efforts" in light of a recent free-for-all at a shareholders meeting of a big-name high-technology company, during which some shareholders made "irrational requests," resulting in a brawl.
Chen made the remarks when he met at the Presidential Office with recipients of the Golden Awards for Extraordinary Products of National Image.
Since 1990, when the government established the Golden Awards for Extraordinary Products of National Image, a great number of companies have made strenuous efforts to upgrade their management, research and development, product design, marketing and business operations, benefiting themselves economically and also making extraordinary contributions to improving Taiwan's international image, Chen said.
Recipients of this year's prestigious award include the founders of Trend--an anti-virus software giant--Premier and Unitech, two makers of high-technology products.
