President Chen Speaks at a Dinner Meeting of Social Workers
Taipei, June 16 (CNA) President Chen Shui-bian Sunday urged the political parties of Taiwan to step up their cooperation so as to build a solid foundation for promotion of democracy in this country.

Speaking at a dinner meeting of social workers, Chen said that, in order to facilitate the development of democracy in Taiwan, the political parties should resolve their differences and strengthen their cooperation as soon as possible.

He said he will make a great effort to negotiate with leaders of all political parties for an early convening of a "summit meeting of party leaders" in Taipei. He believed that in such a meeting the political leaders would be able to exchange their opinions frankly and map out good plans for national development and for promotion of democracy in Taiwan.

Chen also stressed the importance of promoting freedom and human rights in this country.
