President Chen Speaks at a Ceremony to Mark the 65th Anniversary of National Taiwan Normal University
Taipei, June 5 (CNA) The competitiveness of a country lies in the level of education its people enjoy, President Chen shui-bian said Wednesday.

Speaking at a ceremony to mark the 65th anniversary of National Taiwan Normal University -- formerly the nation's teacher-training center -- Chen said education is a vital part of the country's foundation, especially during the age when knowledge is the pillar of economic development.

Although the university is transforming from teacher-training to an ordinary university, Chen urged it to maintain its excellent tradition as the cradle of the country's marvelous high school teachers and a pillar of the country's education.

The school, together with its numerous distinguished alumni, have become a cherished part of the nation's fabric, the president said.
