Vice President Lu Addresses the Opening of a Symposium on the Demand and Supply of Human Resources in the Information Industry
Taipei, June 6 (CNA) Further upgrading of Taiwan's prosperous information industry lies in the number of talented people it can recruit, Vice President Annette Lu said Thursday.

Speaking at the opening of a symposium on the demand and supply of human resources in the information industry, Lu said the island's accession to the World Trade Organization has ushered in a new era in ties with mainland China.

The strong attraction of the mainland market to local businessmen will force Taiwan to convert from a worldwide manufacturing stronghold to a research and development powerhouse and the success of this transformation will hinge on how many qualified scientists and technicians it can recruit, Lu went on.

She called for the revision of regulations to make it easier for such people to change jobs among the government, academic institutions and business sector.

Noting that Taiwan's Western-trained scientists laid the groundwork for the booming information industry, Lu said the country should repeat the success by sending more students to study in the West. Those students will help the island's future development with the technology they learn abroad, Lu said.
