Taipei, May 22 (CNA) President Chen Shui-bian said that pursuing the ideal of a nation based on human rights has been a major part of his administration's agenda and that it is the aspiration of the 23 million people on Taiwan.
The president made the remarks when he received more than 50 delegates from 26 countries attending the annual meeting of the World League for Freedom and Democracy (WLFD) Wednesday.
The president said that Taiwan will continue to promote human rights and will take concrete action by establishing a national human rights commission.
Chen noted that despite regional clashes and crisis, he believes that human being's pursuit of the universal values of democracy, freedom, human rights and peace will remain unchanged.
He lauded the WLFD for its dissemination of the ideas of freedom and democracy to other parts of the world so that justice and basic human rights will be respected and protected.
The WLFD held its 32nd congress May 19-21 at the Grand Hotel. Among the resolutions passed by the participants in the closing ceremony was one in support of Taiwan's bid to become an observer in the World Health Organization.
