After the unfortunate passing of US Senate Armed Services Committee Chairman John McCain on August 26 (August 25 in the United States), President Tsai Ing-wen immediately expressed deepest condolences, and extended her sympathies to his family.

Chairman McCain was one of Taiwan's most important friends in the United States. When President Tsai recently transited in the United States during a trip to visit Taiwan's South and Central American diplomatic allies, she dispatched Secretary-General to the President Chen Chu (陳菊) to Arizona to visit Chairman McCain during his convalescence, and convey the president's best wishes.

Chairman McCain was a US senator for many years, and highly respected in US political circles. He had deep ties of friendship with Taiwan, played an active role in passing many Taiwan-friendly bills, and supported Taiwan with substantive action. For his many years spent defending democracy worldwide, and for his staunch support for Taiwan, President Tsai conveyed to Chairman McCain the deepest respect and gratitude of the people of Taiwan. The president expressed her deepest condolences for the loss of an important friend of Taiwan.
