President Chen Attends a Ceremony Marking the Completion of the Extrahigh-voltage Electrical Substation in the Tainan Science-based Industrial Park
Taipei, May 16 (CNA) President Chen Shui-bian said Thursday that Taiwan will establish a world-class investment environment so that manufacturers will not have to worry about water and electricity supply problems.

The president made the remarks while attending a ceremony marking the completion of the extrahigh-voltage electrical substation in the Tainan Science-based Industrial Park in southern Taiwan.

Chen said that he was pleased to see that major construction projects in the Tainan Science-based Industrial Park are being completed one by one, and he expressed his appreciation to the Taiwan Power Company for their efforts in the completion of the substation.

The president noted that the Tainan Science-based Industrial Park is one of the major construction projects of the nation's economic stimulus plan as well as a major step in turning Taiwan into a green silicon island. This will help boost the high-tech industrial development of the nation in the same way that the Hsinchu Science-based Industrial Park in northern Taiwan has, the president said.

The extrahigh-voltage substation is the third indoor one in Taiwan and was build at a cost of NT$3.28 billion (US$94.63 million) and is housed in a five-building complex.

The president said it was significant that this substation had been built to harmonize with its natural surroundings, in contrast with other functional structures that have clashed with the landscape.

The president stressed that Taiwan, as an export-oriented country, has to strengthen its economy to upgrade national competitiveness. He said the completion of the substation will not only provide a steady supply of power to the manufacturers in the park, but will help draw new companies to the park and create job opportunities.

The Tainan Science-based Industrial Park used 139,000 kilowatts last year and is expected to use 200,000 kilowatts this year.
