Presidential Office responds to remarks by US Vice President Mike Pence

Addressing statements made by US Vice President Mike Pence in a speech delivered on October 4, Presidential Office Spokesperson Lin He-ming (林鶴明) said that Mr. Pence’s remarks show US’s deep concern about our regional situation and China’s behavior in the international community. In his speech, Mr. Pence mentioned Taiwan several times, and we are grateful to the US government for lauding Taiwan’s democratic achievements, supporting Taiwan’s international space, and expressing concern about the regional security situation.

Spokesperson Lin explained that, as President Tsai Ing-wen has stated, in addressing cross-strait relations our goodwill will not change, our commitments will not change, and we will not revert to the old path of confrontation, nor will we bow to pressure. As a responsible member of the international community, Taiwan will continue to cooperate with all regional stakeholders as a staunch guardian of regional peace and prosperity, working together to contribute to cross-strait and regional security and wellbeing.
