President Chen Visits Hsinchu County
2002-05-03

Hsinchu, May 3 (CNA) President Chen Shui-bian warned Friday that a great deal needs to be done if Taiwan's agriculture sector is to survive now that the country is a member of the World Trade Organization.

Speaking during a visit to a tourist farm in Wu-Fong village in northern Taiwan's Hsinchu County, Chen continued: "Agriculture serves as the solid foundation of national development." He added that the government should pay more attention to upgrading the sector.

Viewing a hot spring area at the farm, Chen expressed his satisfaction with Hsinchu County's idea of tourist agriculture, an idea developed in recent years and aimed at combining natural and human resources to create profit in the face of increased agricultural competition from overseas.
