2002-04-18

Taipei, April 18 (CNA) ROC President Chen Shui-bian said Thursday that the openness and exuberance of Taiwan's democratization have contributed to the development of grassroots folk culture and refinement around the island.

Speaking at a meeting of the National Culture Association in his capacity as president of the organization, Chen said cultural development is a continued, sustainable process and needs the participation and contribution of every citizen.

Chen said promoting Taiwan's cultural renaissance has been one of his administration's major policy goals. "I hope the National Culture Association will play a larger and more active role in boosting the island's cultural development," the president said.

Chen acknowledged the association's plan to set up a new Internet Web site to introduce Taiwan's latest cultural development programs and relevant activities, saying it would open a new window for overseas Chinese and people around the world to learn more about Taiwan.

The president also reaffirmed his commitment to forge an environment favorable for various domestic ethnic groups to preserve and resurrect their cultural legacies to maintain Taiwan's cultural diversity.
