President Chen Addresses a Ceremony Marking the 100th Anniversary of the Founding of Shechih Elementary School
Taipei, April 14 (CNA) President Chen Shui-bian encouraged a group of elementary school students Sunday to make good use of their opportunity to study at school and prepare themselves for their future responsibilities.

Speaking at a ceremony marking the 100th anniversary of the founding of Shechih Elementary School in Taipei City, the president called the pupils the future of the country.

Although short in time, Chen said, the six years of study at elementary school, like a seed sowed in fertile ground, has a profound bearing on the whole life of a student.

He lauded Shechih Elementary School, founded in 1902, as a cradle of many distinguished people who have contributed much to the country's development.

Chen urged the students of the school to maintain the tradition built by their distinguished predecessors.

After the ceremony, the president cut a nine-layer birthday cake with other guests at the ceremony.

Notable among the guests present at the ceremony were four groups of alumni belonging to four generations of the same family, with the oldest among them being 98 years of age.
