President Chen Congratulates Costa Rican President-elect Abel Pacheco de la Espriella
Taipei, April 10 (CNA) President Chen Shui-bian congratulated Costa Rican President-elect Abel Pacheco de la Espriella Wednesday on a landslide election victory in the Central American country. Chen expressed his admiration for Pacheco's success in winning the largest-ever number of votes in Costa Rica's presidential election history.

His success also marks the first time that his Christian Social Unity Party has managed to win two presidential elections in a row, Chen noted. He told Pacheco that he has fond memories of his visit to Costa Rica in August 2000.

Pacheco visited Taiwan in August 1993 in his capacity as chairman of the Christian Social Unity Party and Chen invited him to make a state visit to the Republic of China in his capacity as Costa Rica's president in the near future.

Noting that the ROC and Costa Rica have traditionally maintained cordial relations, Chen said he hopes bilateral relations and cooperation can be further strengthened under Pacheco's presidency. For his part, Pacheco reaffirmed his support for the ROC and expressed his appreciation of Chen's invitation, saying he hopes to visit Taiwan as soon as possible.
