On the evening of July 7 (Taipei time), Presidential Office Spokesperson Xavier Chang (張惇涵) said that, upon learning of the assassination of Haitian President Jovenel Moïse, President Tsai Ing-wen expressed her deepest sympathy and sorrow on behalf of the people and government of Taiwan. President Tsai remembered President Moïse's work to promote stronger Taiwan-Haiti cooperation as well as his speaking out repeatedly in support of Taiwan's international participation during his time in office, and wished the family of President Moïse comfort in this time of grief.

Spokesperson Chang noted that Taiwan and Haiti have cultivated a strong friendship since establishing formal diplomatic ties 65 years ago. In the wake of this tragic incident, President Tsai directed Foreign Minister Joseph Wu (吳釗燮) and our embassy in Haiti to convey Taiwan's sincere condolences to the government of Haiti, and to continue to closely monitor subsequent developments while ensuring the safety of Taiwanese expatriates there. The president also stated that Taiwan will firmly support our ally Haiti in this challenging time, and expressed hope that the Haitian government will continue to function effectively, that our joint infrastructure projects will proceed as planned, and that peace will prevail in Haitian society and people's lives as soon as possible.
