2021-08-05

In response to the United States government's August 4 (US EST) announcement of the sale of 40 M109A6 Paladin Medium Self-Propelled Howitzer Systems and related equipment to Taiwan, Presidential Office Spokesperson Xavier Chang (張惇涵) today (August 5) thanked the US on behalf of the government of Taiwan for fulfilling its commitments under the Taiwan Relations Act and the Six Assurances.

Spokesperson Chang noted that this arms sale is the first by the US to Taiwan since President Joe Biden took office, and demonstrates the great importance the US government attaches to Taiwan's defense capabilities. By providing us with defensive weapons and helping us strengthen our self-defense capabilities, the US government is improving Taiwan's confidence in our efforts to ensure regional security and peace in the Taiwan Strait.

Spokesman Chang emphasized that Taiwan will continue to deepen cooperation with the US and other like-minded countries, contributing to peace and stability in the Taiwan Strait and promoting development and prosperity in the Indo-Pacific region.
