President Chen Receives Representatives from Outstanding Enterprises Which have Attached Importance to the Employment of Female Labor
2002-03-07

Taipei, March 7 (CNA) ROC President Chen Shui-bian stressed the importance of gender equality Thursday, saying that he will do whatever he can to provide a fairer work environment for women in Taiwan.

He made the remarks while receiving representatives from outstanding enterprises which have attached importance to the employment of female labor.

Chen said that Women's Day, which falls on March 8, provides a chance for the government to review its efforts on protection of the interests of women.

As the Gender Equality in Employment Law will be implemented March 8, the president noted that he hopes women in Taiwan will be able to enjoy more comfortable lives in a more stable social condition.

Saying that the world is entering the era of knowledge-based economies, Chen said that more educated women have joined the labor market.

As a result, he said the employment of women laborers and the protection of their interests have become important parts of the government's labor and human rights policies.

Despite the fact that conditions for woman workers have improved, Chen noted that some institutional problems still hinder women workers from making contributions in some economic and social aspects.

He said the implementation of the Gender Equality in Employment Law is a start for the government to build a society where men and women workers are treated equally.
